Vintage sideboards are the quintessential accessory for any dining room. These waist length beauties became apparent in some European countries such as England, Scotland, France, and Belgium sometime during the 18th century. But they became a dining room staple in the 19th century while eventually making their way to the U.S. There is some confusion as to the difference between buffets and sideboards, and truth be told that is very much up to each individual and their tastes. Some would argue that a vintage sideboard has characteristically short or nonexistent legs whilst buffets tend to have longer legs. Others would say that the difference lies only in the placement of the furniture (i.e if it’s used strictly in the dining room it is considered a buffet and if it is used in the living room or other areas of the home it is considered a sideboard). The lovely thing about either or is that they can really be used anywhere in the home, be it in the bedroom, the bathroom or the foyer. They are generally very stylish and add character to any room while lending the functionality of cupboards and drawers with plenty of storage and the surface for some fashionable displays.
Whether you’ll be using using them to store your best china and display meals before they are served, or to store personal items and display photographs, you have many styles to choose from. Depending on what kind of style component you want to add to the room you can go for a more traditional design with ornate carvings and classic legs, perhaps take a more rustic turn by choosing a vintage sideboard made of natural materials and left with more untouched hues,or maybe go a more modern route by choosing one with sleek lines and a smooth finish.
Any way you look at it, vintage sideboards are a splendid idea. They’re beautiful, functional and go perfectly anywhere. Find the one that speaks to you and watch your house truly become a home.
