Vintage cushions and Throws are great tools to help bring an interior scheme together, and using them is a brilliant way to add personality to your look. When you’ve already set up the furniture, maybe even the tapestry, it can be a tad difficult to choose the cushions and throws that will either perfectly complement the aesthetics of your space or add that pop of pizzazz that is needed.
There are a few general rules when it comes to
decorating with vintage cushions and throws to make sure that you achieve an aesthetically pleasing result.
If you’re going for a more traditional look it’s
best to use an even number of cushions. The even number lends symmetry and structure to the room. You also want to lean more towards classic fabrics like silk, velvet, or shop around for some vintage cushions . While paisley prints go really well in a traditional setting, you still want to balance out busy prints with something a little more subdued.
If you have a more modern theme in mind, an odd number of cushions should do the trick. As for style; solid colours with minimal geometric shapes or patterns work splendidly.
If you’re leaning more towards the eclectic side; use an odd number of cushions. You can mix and match fabrics and patterns in a way that they don’t seem all that structured, but make sure to pick a key element that stays the same or similar in all of them so that there is still a sense of unity. The fun thing about eclectic design is that you can really reach in all kinds of directions to pull inspiration. Some vintage cushions would do very nicely to add that extra bit of character to the room.
In general, try to stick to either the same colour palette or a contrast palette as the furniture. If not, match a specific aspect of the space (i.e. curtains, focus wall, centrepiece). Also, keep in mind that larger cushions add an air of comfort and lounging while smaller ones look more modern and chic.
Throws work in much the same way as cushions. Choose the colours and patterns according to the style you have in mind for the whole room. For a more intimate cosy feel, use a chunkier, fluffier throw. And if you’re looking for a statement piece to complete your room in a more modern, chic way, look for finer materials. Throws can be either casually draped or carefully folded over the arm of a chair, the back of a sofa, the headboard of a bed, over the back and tucked under the seat of a chair, pulled three quarters up the bed, and literally any way you would like it to be.
