Accessories are what gives a home personality. Through house accessories one can get to know the people that live there and their stories. There’s inspiration everywhere and a million ways we’d like to accessorize our homes but making it all aesthetically pleasing while complementing the existing theme can be a little confusing. If you can’t decide on what kind of antique, eclectic, modern or vintage home accessories to decorate your home with we have a few guidelines and tricks that may help sort out the confusion.
You can start with something simple, like a set of vintage cushions, a new table lap or even a rug. Figure out the function of your accessory; adding warmth, safe place for kids to play, or just to add a pop of color. And remember that there are many places to place your accessory. For example, if you’d like to get a new vintage rug you will need to choose the perfect spot. Some believe that only the front legs of furniture should be on the rug while others believe that the rug should be separate from all but what is in the middle (like a coffee table for example). A rug is like the foundation for the whole room; once the foundation is in place, you can work your way up from there. Then you can move on to cushions and throws which in some ways are much simpler to choose than a rug and in others much more difficult. Just keep in mind that if your theme is traditional you can use an even number of cushions to add a sense of symmetry and if your home is more modern or eclectic you should use an odd number of cushions so as not to be too structured.
As for smaller modern home accessories it’s lovely to have items that share the same colour palette or follow a certain theme grouped together. When decorating a mantel or a table the rules are a little different; if the room is traditional you can place items of the same set or identical pieces on either end of the surface, and if you have a more eclectic or modern theme it is more fashionable to place such items in small groups. The most important thing is to try not to clutter home accessories all over the place. Just like you wouldn’t with jewellery, you should refrain from placing every accessory you own on display. Use the season, festivals or general themes as a guide.
So, remember, if its antique, modern, retro or vintage home accessories that you are looking for, Lesser Spotted has it covered for you.
